How We Decorated for Christmas On a Budget!

As I am sure you are all well aware of, my fiancé Lucas (also known as the Cute Blonde Boy) and I, moved in together earlier this year and since then we have been having a lot of “firsts” together. So, along with all the other ones, this is our first Christmas together! Well, kind of. More like our first Christmas living together and decorating together and waking up in the same place on Christmas day!

So when it was time to decorate, I was very torn about how we should do it. We don’t have a lot of decorations between the two of us, heck, Lucas literally had nothing. I had accumulated a little bit of Christmas decor from my time in college and living at home, but we didn’t have a ton. Plus, it was our first Christmas together and I wanted to decorations to reflect that. But, also being a recent grad with an okay income but still lots of student loans to pay off, I didn’t have a giant budget to work with. I had to get creative in my Christmas decoration buying.

The biggest thing I was torn over was how to decorate the tree. I had ideas about the other things I wanted to do around our place, but I just wasn’t sure about the tree. Lucas grew up with a uniformed, themed tree. I, on the other hand, grew up with a tree full of family / sentimental ornaments. If you follow me on Instagram, you know how much this effected my life! I just couldn’t make up my mind. After much consideration, debating with myself, my mom, Lucas, and my co-workers, I decided it would be okay to try something new and go with a themed tree. I told myself if I hated it, I would return it all and get my money back (lol!).

RIP to our gingerbread house that collapsed after 10 minutes…LOL!

SO, after literally weeks of searching and researching, here are the things we ended up buying for our apartment and how we are decorating on a budget. I have linked things for you to make it easy and also provided my top tips on where to spend and where to save! We didn’t go to crazy and I am sure we will accumulate more stuff over the years, but I feel like it is a very good starting point!

Ornaments

For our tree this year I decided to go for a rose gold theme. I know, I know, it’s very girly. But, Lucas didn’t care and I think its beautiful so IT’S FINE. I bought all of my Christmas tree decor at Michaels because they have the best sales and discounts. Almost all of their Christmas decorations (including trees!) have been 40-50% off all season so I would check them out ASAP!

Stockings & Other Decor

My Top Tips!
(On saving money when decorating for the holidays!)

  • Hunt for the best deals!
    • For real, take the time and do your research! We decorated pretty early but I was looking for deals and discounts as early as the beginning of November. Wait for big discount days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. I waited to purchase our stockings until these days because I got 40% off both of them and saved big $$$!
  • Invest in things you will use for years!
    • For us, that is our stockings. We were looking for classic stockings that sort of went together and that we would want to use for years to come. I knew I wanted them to be from Pottery Barn because they sort of checked all the boxes for us. When I got them on sale too, it was a no brainer.
  • Don’t buy what you don’t need!
    • Like 6 strands of garland, 10 boxes of lights, and 3 bins of ornaments. You don’t need them. Just buy exactly what you need and save yourself some cash.
  • DIY what you can!
    • We did this by making our own bows. We could have bought pre-made bows to stick on the tree but those start at $8! Instead, search some YouTube videos and learn how to make your own. I used the ribbon linked above to make mine and I love them! They take some playing with but trust me, you can do it!
  • Go cheap when you can!
    • When it comes to things you aren’t sure you will use every year, buy them cheap. Other things you can find for cheap: twinkly lights and bottle brush trees. I found both of these things in the Target Dollar Spot for $3 or less! Just go hunting and you will find some good things for cheap!

Decorating for the holidays doesn’t have to be expensive. If you are smart and plan for it, you can actually save yourself a lot of money. For our first Christmas together, I think we did pretty well for ourselves. I can’t wait to see how our first Christmas goes but I have to say, I think it’s going to be a good one.

Shine on,
Maddy
