EPISODE 52: [EDUCATION] The Truth Behind Work / Life Balance

Plot twist — there is actually no such thing as work/life balance. There just isn’t such a thing as true balance between our work and our life. It just doesn’t happen because here’s the thing, when you take time for one thing, you take it away from another part of your life. Maybe it’s your pets, your kids, your husband, or your friends.

Remember this: you are not your work. You are a full human who, yes, does that thing for work and you are in love with it (or hate it), but you are also a human with a life that needs to be lived to the fullest.Time is the one thing that we all have a limited amount of and I want to make sure you are using it wisely to live a life you are 100% obsessed with.

And I cannot say thank you enough for being part of this amazing community and allowing me to bring these things to you guys, every single week. All right now that all of my announcements and fun, celebratory things are out of the way. Let’s go ahead and get into today’s episode. So to wrap up our month talking about work life balance, and how to get more done. And all of these things, I wanted to send out a gentle reminder and kind of a tough love reminder to remember about work life balance, right, because we hear this phrase all the time, I need more work life balance, I need more than this, I need to be better at balancing my time between my work and my life. But here’s the thing, my friend, that doesn’t exist, work life balance just does not exist. In my opinion, it doesn’t exist, whether you are working a standard, you know, corporate job, or you’re working for yourself, or you’re maybe working a side hustle or you nanny on the weekends, whatever, you don’t have work life balance, because that just doesn’t exist. And this is something that we’ve actually talked about before on the podcast, because here’s the truth. Whenever you give time to one thing, maybe say your work, then you take it away from something else, which is probably your life, right? Your family, your dogs, your loved ones, whatever. When you designate time, or you spend time doing one thing, you’re taking it away from something else, okay? And that creates an imbalance. When we say we want work life balance, we’re saying that we want to spend equal parts doing life and work. And that just doesn’t happen, you guys, that does not happen because of that knowledge. And that understanding and that belief of when you give time to one thing, you’re taking it away from something else, which if you were to do that on a scale if you had a balanced scale, right, and you had three blocks on both sides, but you took a block from the right side and plunked it down on the left. Your scale is going to be imbalanced it’s going to favor the side that now has four blocks, right? It’s the same thing with your work. It’s the same thing with your life. So then how do we deal with this? How do we cope with this idea that when I decide to take this random Tuesday often work to spend time with my family. That means that I’m not going to be doing things that need to be done to get to where I want to be in my work right to to achieve a certain goal or to hit a certain milestone. How do we deal with knowing that when we decide to work late on a Friday night, that means that we need to then say no to our friends who are asking us to go out to dinner and go see a movie? How do we deal with that? We do it by reminding ourselves of this. Our work is what we do. It is not who we are. And we also remind ourselves that it’s okay to be so in love with our work, that we want to keep doing it. So long as we remind ourselves that we need to live our life outside of our work. So that makes sense. And this is something that I tell myself quite frequently, because you can ask my husband, you can ask my my work, friends, I love what I get to do, every single part of what I get to do as a virtual assistant, as a TPT author has an Etsy shop owner, I love everything that I get to do recording the podcasts, even you guys, I’m obsessed with what I get to do, to where I can do it every single day, every single hour of every single day. But I also need to live a life outside of all of those things that I do for work. Because whenever our time comes to move on beyond this, you know, physical Earth, right? Without getting too deep here, we’re going to want to look back and tell ourselves that we lived a life that we are obsessed with, right? That we lived a life full of joy and happiness. And yes, we had a job that we love, or yes, we left a job that sucked because it was sucking the joy out of what we did every single day. And we want to make sure that when we reflect back on how we spent our time and our life, that we spent it in a way that we are proud of when our time comes you guys whenever that might be, I want you and me to be able to look back on the time that we spent in our life, and be proud of where we spent it to be proud of the fact that we put in long hours and our side hustle to be able to make it our full time thing to be proud of that we said no to our boss giving us another project that we knew was going to take away from our family time that we said yes to taking a three month sabbatical from our professor job to travel Ireland with a really hot Irishman. Right. Like, I want us to look back on our life, and say, I’m so proud. And I’m so thankful of the life that I got to live and the work that I got to do. And that starts with making peace with the idea in the belief that when we spend time doing one thing, we’re taking it away from something else. And that time is the ultimate thing that we run out of eventually, right. And this episode is getting way more philosophical and deep than I intended to when I started recording, but it’s true time is the one thing that we all have a limited amount of. And I don’t want you to be old, 99 million years old and wrinkly sitting on your front porch or sitting on your deathbed and think, wow, I’m really glad I spent all of my youth, all of my 20s 30s 40s and 50s working right, or Wow, I’m really glad that I spent all this time, you know, growing a family, but I never ever had anything for myself, right? We’ve got to find that balance. And we’ve got to make peace with the idea that our time is limited. And we need to spend it in a way that we are proud of. Because at the end of the day, that’s the only thing that we have left is our life and how we spend our time on this earth. And if we’re not proud of that, if we’re not obsessed with how we spent that time, then what is the point? Right? So after today, what do you do? You work towards making peace with that idea. And you work towards spending your time and spending your life in a way that you’re obsessed with that you want to talk to someone else about that you are proud of, and that you want to wake up every single day doing more of right? Because you have control of that you have control as to where you spend your time what you say yes to when you say no, what you add to your plate or what you take off of your plate. You always have control over that. And I want you to remember that going forward. And so my friend, that’s where I leave you for March. That is where I leave you for this episode. It went in a completely different way than I intended, but it’s still something that I want you to think about mull over and send me a message and have a conversation with me over on Instagram.
