EPISODE 92: [EDUCATION] How to Prioritize YOU this year!

It’s all well and good to say that we are going to work on ourselves this year, but nothing is going happen if we don’t first prioritize ourselves! In today’s new episode, I share with you the importance of priorotizing yourself AND how you can do this in 2023. Today’s episode is for every lady who has struggled with saying yes to to themselves and putting themselves first. YOU, my beautiful friend, deserve to be said yes to and put first. Because if you know me, I kind of have some beef with new year’s resolutions because they’re not rooted in a deep enough space to where you actually follow through with them all year long. And that’s exactly what we want to do. Right we want to create sustainable habits and routines and systems and a life that we love and we can live all year long, not just during the month of January when resolutions and everyone’s all excited about like new year new me kind of situation. So all month long, we are talking about that topic of self growth and not just self growth, but how we can sustain and create self growth to be a habit and a routine and, and something that we do consistently over time. So that way we can design a life of joy and a life that we are obsessed with. And last week’s episode, I gave you three things that you can do to grow in this new year all through 2023. And today, we are going to be talking about how to prioritize yourself this year because while I love you so much, I can almost promise you that there have been seasons or times or current situations in your life, where you are not prioritizing yourself, when you should be prioritizing yourself above everyone else in your life. Let’s go ahead and dive into today’s episode, you’re ready. So like I mentioned in today’s show, we are going to be talking about how to prioritize you this year. And before I give you some tangible things that you can do to prioritize yourself, I really want to hit home on the reason why this is important. And why you should be putting yourself in your needs first, before you do that for anyone else. Okay. And again, yes, I am looking at you mothers and you teachers and you nurses and you wives, because I feel as if there this is a common shortcoming, I guess is what you would call it of women where we are taught and trained and men to believe that in order to be a quote unquote good person, or a good mom or a good partner, we have to put everyone else’s needs first when that could not be further from the truth. Because here’s the thing, and I’m sure you’ve probably heard this before. You can’t pour from an empty cup and you you are your own cup, right? Like if your cup is empty, meaning you don’t have extra energy, you’re not, you know, eating well, you’re not drinking enough water, you’re not getting enough sleep, you’re not living in an aligned way, like that’s going to seep into all the other parts of your life, whether you realize it or not, right. And it’s really important that we do things for ourselves. And we, we take care of ourselves, and we prioritize ourselves first, because when we do, we have more energy and more passion. And we are better able to serve those people that we love in our lives more. And we’re more aligned with who we want to be and where we want to go, which then makes us happier and more grateful and more joyful. And all of those things, whether they’re good or bad, seep into all the other parts of our life. And so if you are someone who is currently doing everything in your power for everyone else in your life, first, before doing that for yourself, we need to have a chat. And I want you to take this as a permission, slip or sign or whatever you want to call it, to flip the script and put yourself first for ones. And notice what happens in your relationships when you practice a little bit of intentional selfishness and prioritize you first. And just how much of a positive impact that will have in other areas of your life. Now, how can we do this? Right? How can we prioritize ourselves first, the number one thing that comes to mind when I talk about prioritizing you is setting really intentional boundaries. And I have done up episodes on boundaries. In the past, I have shared things on Instagram about boundaries. Boundaries, in my opinion, are the highest level of self respect, like hands down, there is no better way, in my opinion, to show that you respect yourself more than setting an intentional boundary. And I think what people sometimes initially think about boundaries, is that means that you are I don’t know being needy or being bossy or you’re being unwilling to change or learn new things like that’s that none of that can be further than the truth. A boundary, especially an intentional boundary is a way for you to protect your peace, ask for what you are deserving of. And also maintain or keep a relationship that you want to keep, whether that’s a relationship with yourself, or a relationship with someone else. Because we can set boundaries with other people, we can also set boundaries with ourselves. And I think that people oftentimes forget this like in my life, specifically, I have very specific boundaries with when I work because I love what I do to the point of where I could work every single day and be fine with it and like totally Jay chill and be okay. But I know that when I don’t have that boundary, my relationship in my marriage suffers because I’m I’m working all the time in my relationship with myself suffers because I’m so focused on on being an entrepreneur and owning a business that I forget that I’m also a human and a wife and an individual being separate of my business, right. And boundaries are those things that we can have, again, with ourselves or with other people, in order to maintain those healthy relationships, both with ourselves and other people in our lives. And they are good when you route them in the right place, and they’re intentional and they are aligned with who you are and where you want to go. Boundaries are a really good thing. And I think it’s absolutely something that you can model for other people in your life, whether they are big or little, if you know what I mean. And really show other people that there is a power behind having boundaries. And having a boundary is the best way that you can prioritize yourself. Because when you set a boundary, you’re saying, I’m putting myself first and I respect myself enough to have this boundary in this situation. And I’m going to follow through on it because I am deserving of that follow through and I am deserving of that boundary. Another way that you can prioritize yourself this year is to say yes to what you want, right? And to say yes to you. So what are some things that you have been wanting? That you have been saying no to because of family, or current circumstances, or a relationship or the kind of person you are? Like, what do you want? What do you really, really, really want? Is it to go on a trip? Is it to go shopping for yourself? Is it to take a weekend solo trip all by yourself just so you can have a moment of peace and quiet this year? I want you to say yes to those things. I want you to say I am being selfish in this way. And I’m saying yes to this because it’s something that I truly want. And it’s something that I’m deserving of having another big thing that You can do this year to prioritize yourself is to establish routines and habits that support you. Now, again, I have done multiple episodes and trainings and things on this before. But this is a huge thing that you can really start to implement in January and use that energy that comes from a fresh new year to then establish these habits and make them sustainable all year long. And these habits and routines might look like a daily gratitude practice, it might look like finding a new workout routine, it might mean drinking more water, it might be reassessing your sleep routine, it might even be starting affirmations. Now, here’s the thing that I want to tell you about prioritizing yourself, okay, and this is kind of the not so fun, happy go lucky side of this is that there will be hard parts of doing this. And there will be times in your life where prioritizing yourself feels not so great. But that you you know that you have to do in order to improve your life or get to where you want to be or, or live a life that you love. And the thing that I feel like a lot of people fail to talk about it, which is why I want to make sure that we’re talking about it in this episode is that you almost need to brace for the hard parts of doing this and and know that there are going to be people in your life who don’t appreciate that you’re putting yourself first because they have gotten used to you, letting them treat you however they have been treating you or expecting you to do whatever they tell you to do, because that’s what you’ve been doing. But now you’re not doing them because you are, you know, stepping into your own power and, and realizing that you don’t have to live in that way. And that you don’t have to take that if you don’t want to something that I just want to sort of front load for you is that there is a potential that you might lose some relationships. And when you go through this process, you might be leaving old habits that feel really secure and safe to you. Growth and change can be really hard and can be really painful. I’ve experienced this myself when, when changing, you know what I do for a living and really focusing in on what I truly want. It’s hard, it’s not easy, especially if you’re someone who is like me, and you’re a type two, and you are someone who just loves helping other people, it’s really hard to feel like you’re letting people down. But we have to remember we have to remind ourselves that we have to put ourselves first and that when we are old and dusty, crusty and wrinkly. Who do we want to say that we let down someone who didn’t truly understand what we wanted for ourselves in our lives and someone who wasn’t fully able to respect what we wanted, or the fact that we let ourselves down, right? Like, which would you rather deal with and wrestle with, when it’s, quote unquote, too late to go back and change things. And this is something that I just want to share with you because it’s not going to be easy all the time. It’s not going to be fun all the time. And it’s going to be something that you’re going to have to grow through in order to improve from Okay, and I again, it’s I just feel like this is one of those things that not many people talk about, because it’s not sexy, and it’s not fun. And it’s not something that you want to talk about, right going through a hard season and recognizing that, you know, you’re losing a relationship or you’re losing a habit that used to feel like a safety net for you. And you know, no one really wants to talk about those things. But in this space, we keep it real and we keep it honest. And that’s a really important part of this that I want you to keep in mind as you start to prioritize yourself and make that a consistent part of your life all throughout 2023. And to wrap this up one more thing I wanted to share with you that you can do to prioritize yourself fishier is encouraged other people to do the same. It becomes so much easier to prioritize yourself. When you have other people doing it around you. Whether that’s your husband, or you teach your children this or you talk to your mom about this or your friends, coworkers, whoever, like encourage other people around you to do as well, because when we all grow together, we all get better together, which I think is so cool. And when we encourage other people in a really mindful way, right, sometimes people who if you are like you should prioritize your health more often, they might not take that the way that you want them to take it. So just when you do this in a mindful way, it can be really powerful. And just think of the growth and the the evolution that you can give to somebody else. When you tell them, hey, this is my year of prioritizing me. Like let’s do it together, like let’s talk about these things. So let’s, let’s figure this out together and grow and learn in this way together. And like have it be an accountability thing, have it be an accountability partner situation, and you will find that you are far more consistent and far more motivated because you have someone doing it with you. And that my friends is everything that I have for you today, several ways that you can prioritize yourself this year and a permission slip to just prioritize yourself this year because You totally deserve that.
