Content warnings for this episode: I am talking about some topics that can be seen as politically charged. While that is not the point of this episode, it is something to keep in mind. I personally identify with liberal views and values so if you do not, this episode might not be for you. Please practice kindness and understanding while listening to today’s episode.

In 2024, there are many many things that we are facing as women that are *truly* spooky. In today’s new episode, I break down five things that are TRULY spooky to have to know and realize as a modern day female. You would think we are further along in most of these things but unfortunately we are not. I believe it’s important to stay informed in an age where false information is spread like wildfire. So tune in, take a lesson, and learn!

Good morning, good morning, my dudes, and welcome back to the living in sunshine podcast. Before we get any further in this episode, I am giving the caveat that today’s episode is going to be very blue, okay, and we’re not talking politics here, except we kind of are, but with good reason. And if you are someone who is very conservative or leans very red. This might not be the episode for you, because we are going to be talking about things that I discovered after doing some research, that are truly spooky for us to have to deal with as women. In 2024
we are celebrating Halloween. Happy Halloween. It is tomorrow by the time this episode goes live, by looking at some things that are just truly baffling to me as a woman, as a modern day woman in 2024 the shit we have to deal with. But I will just say some of these things are politically rooted, as a lot of things are these days. And so if that’s not the episode that you are here for, you can bounce on out right now. Check you later. Remember, we are all adults, and we can all respect one another
when we have varying opinions and differences on ideologies and beliefs and sports and values. So without further ado, now that that caveat is over, welcome to the living in sunshine podcast. My name is Maddie. I’m so excited that you are here. And like I mentioned, we are going to be looking at five things that are just truly spooky to think about and to know are happening and real in 2024 I have cited my sources. I don’t know why I just said that so strangely down below in the show notes, so you can check my research, because I’m all about
toting correct information and giving receipts where they need to be given. So let’s go into this. Some of these things are about women’s health, women’s rights, generally, life as a woman, and 2024
because you would think, you you would think, and this is, let me just also say this, in case you’re an international listener, this is a lot of this is for the United States. I’m from the US. I’ve grown up here. I’m American, blah, blah, blah, all of those things. You would think that
there would be more progression for women by this point in the universe’s timeline. But boy, oh boy, are we just really taking a few steps back.
The election is in another few weeks, which is crazy, actually, in like, by the time this comes out, because I’m filming this, or I’m recording this in August, in like a week.
Wow, that’s wild. So a lot of this might get better or worse. I’m hoping for better in the next four years.
So yeah, let’s without diverging anymore. Let’s just get into this. Okay, here are five things, and I did a bunch of research for this episode, which was fascinating, that I am just I can’t believe we’re true in 2024 right? First and foremost, a big one, this has to do with abortion and birth. So if that is a trigger for you, I would just scooch forward until you hear me say, Okay, on to thing number two.
Did you know
after the fall of Roe v Wade a couple years ago, I think it was 2021 2022 I lived in El Paso Texas. I remember when that ruling came down, it was definitely 2021
that 21 states, 21 only 21 less than half the entire United States allow for open abortion per Planned Parenthood’s website, 2021
and as someone who lives in South Carolina, none of them are near me if I were to need that kind of health care, which, in my opinion, birth control, contraceptions, abortions, family planning, is women’s health care, right?
21 states allow for
unrestricted slash, you know, least restricted abortion, health care for women I cannot even imagine. And there are some states out there that the repercussions for having an abortion are as high as prison time for that woman who does that, or the or the Doctor Who.
Who supports and helps that woman through that experience. I just I can’t even imagine being in that situation. Now, you know, for context, Lucas and I have
permanently made some changes in our life to where we will not be having kids. That was a conscious decision on our end. So I’m hoping that this is something that, like I never have to personally go through. But I also hope that this is something that a friend of mine or a loved one or a family member of mine never has to go through. Just imagine being in that situation, having to make that call, and living in a state where that’s not available to you, and you might think, well, you can just travel to a different state. Some people don’t have that luxury. Some people do not have that freedom and that financial security to be able to go and do that right. And so what happens is unsafe and illegal women’s health care in terms of abortion rights, which is dangerous, right? Huge step back and definitely something that we will see in the next few weeks, and we’ve probably been seeing a lot over the news and such regarding how our new leadership is going to handle this. Hold on. I’m going to take Ellie’s collar off because she’s shaking so much, and I don’t want that in the background of the episode.
Yeah, it’s just wild to me that less than half of the US allows for proper women’s healthcare. It just baffles me, because you know what? This would never happen to a man. It would never happen to a man, and that is just my like, angry feminist opinion, this would never happen to a man, ever. It just wouldn’t Okay. Thing number two, that is just truly spooky to think about as a woman in 2024 is that women make 16% less on average than men in the workplace. According to Forbes, 16% and it’s worse, if you are a black or Hispanic women, you make even less. I’m sorry. Women make up over half the population in the world, world, not us, world, and we’re making less money. Why? So why? Why is this happening? Why? Like, where is the justification? Where is the reasoning? Why is it still like this, right? I just, I can’t even fathom, like my husband works in technically, corporate America. He works for, like, a small local company, but his boss is a woman. His boss is a woman. And most, I think, out of all of the managers that he’s ever had, they have been women. And it just just, just to think that being a woman in leadership and making almost 20% less than my counterpart who does the same amount of work, probably less, if we’re being real, is just mind blowing to me. And it’s one of those things, like, there’s a lot of workplace discrepancies going on these days. I was watching a real a couple weeks ago, and it was like, you know, subtle workplace
nuances, or like, discriminations or whatever, between men and women. And it was like, Oh, my God, she’s so bossy, she’s so needy, she’s so demanding. And but then it was like, the flip side was like, Oh, he’s such a leader, he’s so powerful, he’s so self assured. And it’s like, wait, you just said the same thing. They’re acting the same way, but because she’s a she, she’s bossy and demanding and rude and other profane words that I’m not gonna say, but since he’s a he, it’s okay. I just this is one of the many, many, many reasons I work for myself, because I would not be able to self censor myself in the office, and I would probably get myself in trouble every day. Even the jobs that like I worked, not for myself, were women owned businesses like this is why I’m such a hard ass about Supporting Female run and owned businesses and just All hail the female, because I just can’t even believe, like 16% I saw on the same article on Forbes, you guys, on average, oh, two people, man and a woman, who start their corporate jobs at like 20, between 20 and 22 at the end of their career, right? If you do, like a standard, you know, retire at 65 which none of us are gonna be able to do, because the baby boomers have drained the Social Security amount for all of us. Um,
$400,000
less over their lifetime, almost half a million dollars less in their lifetime they will make. I just because they’re female, I just can’t I cannot even it is crazy to me. All right, so carrying on with these five things that I can’t believe are still a thing in 2024. Literally bounces my mind. We are getting into more like health, hormonal related things. This is a big area of focus for me right now as I get closer to 30 and just entering exiting my 20s, because a whole.
Lot happens in your 30s as a female, I encourage you to do some research anyway. Did you know this? Literally, I’m not surprised, but still, I’m just like, hello. As of 2022 and this comes from the National Library of Medicine, as of 2022 women account for more than 50% of the world’s population, but that same proportion is not seen in the number of women used in medical studies compared to men like which breeds, if you think about it, breeds so many real life consequences for women, because doctors, medical professionals, researchers, scientists, literally don’t know what happens to a woman for specific health care you know supports research whatever, because there’s no research on it. There’s literally no research on it. Women have not been included in medical research, in medical studies for like, the last 50 years, which I’m just like, how are we supposed to know the impacts, the differences of medicine or procedures or aging or anything, if we’re not including women in those conversations, if We’re not even considering women as part of the equation, even though we make up more than 50% of the US of the world’s population, I just this boggles my mind, which is why we see women dealing with health issues such as endometriosis, is a great example of a population of women who are saying, I am in pain. I am hurting this. This literally hurts me right. Getting my periods is extremely painful, and their doctors are saying, Oh, you’re just anxious. Oh, just drink more water. Oh, just get better sleep. Oh, maybe you just need a prescription for anti anxiety or antidepressants. Like, no, I am actually dealing with something real, and you’re not listening to me. And I as a positive to this. And this is also going to go into thing number four, social media and the rise of women coming out and being like, this is what’s happening. This is my experience, like what is going on is actually making a positive change on the world. I have talked about her before. I’m gonna plug her again. Everyone who listens to this show, if you are a woman, you need to go follow Dr Mary Claire on Instagram. She is an OB GYN, a gynecologist,
Doctor Who talks all about women’s health and Hormonal Health and all of those things. She’s a great, great, great follow, but she talks about these things a lot, and so this is an area of interest to you. I encourage you to go give her a follow. But just keep in mind that, like, if you are going to the doctor or doing any kind of whatever. Like, ask your doctor, like, what is the research on women for this procedure or for this medication or for this whatever? Like, have you done this on a female before? Like, what is the research behind doing this? And just really be your own best advocate, because that is super, super important. Okay, two more things. Number four, this one, I’m like celebrating. My mom sent me this headline, and I screamed. I was so happy.
Only in the last three months, you guys, this happened either end of July or early August of 2024
has the CDC started to suggest proper pain management for women’s health procedures such as IUD insertion. And this is comes from the CNN. And again, I’m going to link all my research down below. Only in the last three months of 2024
has the CDC, aka the governing body who sets like regulations and suggestions for medical stuff, right? Have they started to say, yeah, having something hyped up your hoo ha like that, and having something go up in your cervix and pinch it and clamp it and then, you know, put something up in there, yeah, yes, that causes pain before then, people were under the belief that their cervix did not have any nerve endings and that it was just a pain free area, baby, baby, I can promise you there are nerve endings on your cervix. There are any woman who has had any kind of pelvic exam knows
things down there, and it is extremely painful as someone who had an IUD inserted, I have a copper IUD. I’ve had the copper IUD for six or seven years now, I can tell you that it hurts. It does not feel like nothing going in, and it is extremely painful to have to go through that. And it’s just baffles my brain to.
